Rockin For West Papua Global Concert at Howler Melbourne

Join us at Howler Melbourne on Sunday October 21st for a day of celebration raising funds and awareness for the #FreeWestPapuacampaign in these global concerts.

Join The Black SistazBlack Orchid Stringband Sol Nation and Mitch Tambo for an afternoon of music, dancing, community, freedom and blessings!

For the last two years, bands, promoters, venues, and human rights advocates have all joined forces to collectively use music as a weapon by Rockin For West Papua. Over the course of the same weekend more than 75 bands, in 33 cities, on 4 different continents have stood in solidarity with the people of West Papua to shine a light on the ongoing genocide and human rights abuses.

Australian coordinator for the Free West Papuan campaign Ash Brennan said: “Music has always been an inspiration to me as it has to people around the world, rich or poor. West Papuans use music to tell their stories, but it is illegal to play these songs in West Papua. The penalty is 15 years prison. I’m excited that musicians and artists from around the world are coming together for the third year running to stand with West Papua, to show music, art and human spirit can defeat tyranny.”

Rockin for West Papua has raised vital funds for the United Liberation Movement for West Papua, creating real hope for the oppressed peoples of West Papua. Including the funding of a ULMWP delegation trip to the United Nations in New York to deliver a petition for freedom signed by 1.8 million West Papuans.

“Indonesia has tanks and guns. We West Papuans only have guitars. Music is our weapon for Freedom.” – Benny Wenda, Chairman of the United Liberation Movement for West Papua

On this day, we are celebrating unity, alliance, community, commitment and connection that has led to the 16th anniversary of independence for Timor Leste and the unyielding fight for freedom for West Papua, who have been under Indonesian occupation since 1963.

Timor Leste gained independence after Indonesia relinquished control in 1999. East Timor became the first new sovereign state of the 21st century on 20 May 2002 and joined the United Nations and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries.

Thanks to incredible strength, resilience, tenacity and fortitude of the people and its leaders, Timor has lead the way and achieved what the West Papuans have been striving for for the past 40 years.

Indonesia seized West Papua, the western half of the island of New Guinea, in 1963, shortly after the Dutch colonists pulled out. Political parties were immediately banned, nascent Papuan nationalism crushed, and tens of thousands of troops, police and special forces flooded in. In 1969 a UN-supervised sham referendum was held, and just over a thousand hand-picked representatives were bribed, cajoled and threatened into voting in favour of Indonesian rule.

A police state has shackled the vast region ever since, battling a low-level tribal insurgency and suppressing independence aspirations with such vigour that raising the Papuan national flag can land you 15 years in prison.

Only TOGETHER in unity, cohesion, solidarity and standing as one, we can create better worlds and make the change we need to see.
